Canalys Forum APAC – from Manila to Singapore
As the COVID-19 situation continues and we get used to the “new normal”, it is inevitable that we have to adapt and make some big decisions. Early last month we made the first of these tough choices. After much deliberation, we decided to move our Canalys Forum APAC, scheduled to take place in Manila, to Singapore. The dates remain unchanged, with the event running from 17 to 19 November. Changing the location was not a decision we took lightly. We had, and still have, the wellbeing of our staff, partners and delegates in mind. We made the decision along with our keynote sponsors and distributor partners, making sure it was the right move for all, and took advice from our suppliers and venues on the ground in Manila.
So why did we make this move? Manila entered one of the world’s strictest and longest lockdowns on 16 March (on 1 June they announced easing of their measures, after 76 days), which put the event in doubt. There was no indication as to when the lockdown would be lifted, and it became apparent that the risk outweighed the potential success of the event.
While Singapore was one of the earliest countries to have confirmed cases, back in January, and has the largest number of cases in Southeast Asia, the government has been strong in its communication and decision-making. It has been praised for widespread testing practices and the cautious approach taken to exit its “circuit breaker” lockdown. Singapore is home to one of our Canalys offices and is recognized as an efficient business hub, with many of our partners based on the island. This allows us to consider some form of in-person event taking place there.
Since we made our decision, community cases have been falling on a daily basis and there are discussions taking place between Singapore and other APAC countries to create “green lanes” for essential business travel. All of this shows there are positive signs for the revival of the island state.
Our plan for the event remains unchanged. We have a new city and we will have new protocols in place to ensure your safety. As every year, we can’t wait to see you!
