Full steam ahead for Canalys Forums

Gemma Edwards | Tuesday, March 17 2020

Anyone reading the news will have seen tech conferences being cancelled or postponed around the world. You might be wondering what that means to the global Canalys events team and to the way we approach the future of our Canalys Forums.

We find ourselves in challenging times, trying to navigate this unprecedented situation. Focusing on the events industry and what we’ve experienced in the last few months, our sympathy goes out to those companies that have been forced to make the difficult decision to cancel. I know first-hand the time, effort, enthusiasm, passion and of course money that events teams invest. It must be incredibly disappointing to cancel.

I don’t have a crystal ball but I remain optimistic that the tech industry will swiftly get back to business as usual. Here in Singapore, I have personally seen the strict measures the government has put in place to ensure the safety of all on the island, and it seems to be working. My colleagues in Shanghai have been closely tracking COVID-19 since it first emerged in China last year. The good news is that we are already seeing positive signs of recovery in China.

My team and I are concentrating hard to take the right steps to ensure we see our customers later this year. The unfortunate impact of the current wave of cancellations at other tech conferences means tens of thousands of important meetings between vendors, channel partners and distributors will not happen. The channel needs to connect and when it does, Canalys will be ready!

Canalys expects the impact of COVID-19 will be felt most sharply in the coming quarter, with an expectation of an improvement in the second half of the year. This means the Canalys Forums, which kick off in Europe in October followed by APAC in November and LATAM in December, should be perfectly timed to help the channel get back to business.

We are making several important announcements to provide comfort to our sponsors, distributors and partners.

  1. All is going ahead as planned. As the Canalys Forums are scheduled to take place toward the end of H2, Canalys expects they will not be affected by the current situation.
  2. Canalys is taking the risk to support our sponsors, distributors and partners and ensure this important industry event continues. We are updating our policies, including offering more favorable terms around refunds, in the unlikely case of a cancellation due to COVID-19. Speak to me or your account manager for details.
  3. Global registration will go live in the May, rather than in March. We appreciate many are anxious about the current situation and feel this delay will give time to plan.

Communication is key, now more than ever. I will continue to share my experiences at Canalys and information about what we are doing, as well as any helpful resources. If you have any questions, please get in touch via our contact form.
